50th Anniversary Advice: Make Early Reservations
FOC can suggest two possibilities for members planning to attend the 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps in September 2011. As the celebration, September 22-26, falls within the same time period as the World Bank’s and International Monetary Fund’s annual meetings, D. C. hotel rooms will be very difficult to find. Those two institutions block out many hotels well in advance. Other competing groups for hotels are numbers of activists who come to demonstrate at the annual meetings. Here are two alternatives.
FOC has reserved a block of hotel rooms at the Savoy Suites, located at 2505 Wisconsin Ave., N. W., in upper Georgetown. The rate is heavily discounted at $211 per night, single or double room, with parking included. There is a bus stop outside the hotel’s main door. Reservations must be made by August 22 to obtain this rate. Call: (202) 625-5410, use Attendee Code PCA (Peace Corps Association) when making a reservation.
There are many hotels/motels in the metropolitan Washington area, which includes Northern Virginia (Arlington & Alexandria), and Montgomery County, Maryland (Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Silver Spring). Also, Washington has a very good subway system that connects the suburban hotels, in which rates are less expensive, to the downtown area. For example, Choice Hotel in Silver Spring, MD (301-565-3444) ranges from $100-$120 per night. Double Tree in Bethesda, MD (301-652-2000) ranges from $150-$160 per night.
